Sri Aurobindo Society is registered as a society at Kolkata (formerly Calcutta), India, under the Societies Registration Act of 1860 (now West Bengal Act XXVI of 1961). The Sri Aurobindo Institute of Research in Social Sciences (SAIRSS) is an autonomous research wing of the Sri Aurobindo Society. The research areas of focus for SAIRSS include rural development, education, health, communication and media studies, management, Indian culture, youth and women, science and technology and sustainable development. SAIRSS draws inspiration from the deep insights of Sri Aurobindo and The Mother on consciousness and its systematic development in an individual as well as in collective life.

In addition to regular in-house publications of books, journals and audio-visuals, the Institute publishes articles in outside publications on the outcome of its various research activities, and its members and faculty participate regularly in national and international conferences and seminars.
